Fran'ois Fillon, prime minister, said the reform is aimed at making the nation’s ports more competitive with others in Europe, but it could face stiff opposition from dockworkers unions.
He said discussions would take place port by port, with the aim of nearly tripling container capacity in French ports by 2015, creating 30,000 jobs.
The ports being targeted are: Marseille-Fos, Dunkirk, Le Havre, Rouen, Nantes-Saint-Nazaire, La Rochelle et Bordeaux. Paris and Guadeloupe would be the subject of a special study.
