Gantry cranes arrive for new Le Havre terminal Four super post-Panamax gantry cranes built in China arrived last week at the Port 2000 container complex in the Port of Le Havre in France for the Terminal Porte Oc'ane, a joint venture between APM Terminals and French stevedoring group Perrigault SA.
   The gantries, ordered from Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery (ZPMC), are among the biggest in the world. They are pre-equipped with an overall lifting capacity of 100 tons and a 'twin-lift' mode, making it possible to handle two 40-foot containers at the same time. With a footing of 35 meters and a unit load of 1,750 tons, each gantry crane can handle 22 container-wide vessels.
   The terminal is the second for Port 2000 and is due to start operations by the end of the year. It will have two 350-meter quays with an option for a third berth.
   The first terminal at Port 2000, Terminal de France, opened in April 2006 and is jointly operated by CMA CGM and G'n'rale de Manutention Portuaire with a capacity of 675,000 TEUs.
   Mediterranean Shipping Co. and Perrigault have been selected to operate six berths at a third terminal.
   After full completion, Port 2000 will provide 12 quay berths each 350 meters long, with a total quay length of 4.2 kilometers.
