Georgia Ports approves Jasper plan

   The Georgia Ports Authority’s board of directors has approved an agreement to work cooperatively with South Carolina for development of a new port on the north side of the Savannah River in Jasper County, S.C.
   The agreement had already been approved by the South Carolina State Port Authority last week.
   The intergovernmental agreement “is an important step towards continued economic growth and activity for Georgia and South Carolina,” said Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue. “This joint port will give this region additional capacity to meet future shipping needs, and will lead to quality jobs for families on both sides of the Savannah River.”
   The agreement creates a joint project office that will be funded by both port authorities, which will determine the feasibility and best location for the terminal, file for a development permit, and develop a business plan. It also provides for the sale of 1,400 acres in South Carolina owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation for disposal of dredge spoils to the port authorities of both states.
   The joint project office will concentrate on ways to use private capital in the construction of the Jasper terminal.
