The Provisions for Transportation of Solid Bulk Cargoes database (https://www.gl-group.com/webapp/protos_home.do ) allows shipping companies, chartering companies and marine terminals access to all safety regulations for dry freighters, and contains a list of more than 60 solid bulk cargoes matched up with ship data.
Dry freighters certified with PROTOS are given a bulk certificate, valid for five years, which contains a detailed list of the cargoes that the ship is allowed to transport, a list of notes specific to the cargoes, as well as a list of technical requirements for equipment.
Germanischer Lloyd said its certificate ensures compliance with the Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes (BC Code), which various administrations are increasingly demanding. “Moreover the International Maritime Organization is working on making mandatory the BC Code by 2011,” it said.
