Gettysburg departs Suisan Bay fleet

The U.S.-flag liquid bulk tanker Gettysburg will depart the Maritime Administration's Suisan Bay Reserve Fleet on Friday.

Built in 1957 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., the Esso Shipping Co. vessel was originally named the Esso Gettysburg. In 1973, the name was changed to Exxon Gettysburg. The vessel entered the National Defense Reserve Fleet in Suisan Bay, Calif., and was acquired by MarAd in 1987 and the name changed to Gettysburg.

'The vessel will have marine growth and loose exterior paint removed at a San Francisco dry dock ship repair facility before departure for Texas, where it will be recycled,' MarAd said.
