Gov. Bush pushing ethanol in concert with Brazil

Gov. Bush pushing ethanol in concert with Brazil Gov. Jeb Bush Monday unveiled a cooperative program between Florida and Brazil aimed at spurring development of ethanol production.
The new program is called the Inter-American Commission on Ethanol, and marks the outgoing governor's final push in his drive to increase ethanol production not only as an alternative fuel but as an international trade commodity the would boost Florida agriculture and ports.
Bush introduced the program at ceremonies in Miami with Roberto Rodrigues, president of the Superior Council of Agrobusiness and Brazil's former minister of agriculture, and Luis Alberto Moreno, president of the Inter-American Development Bank.
The Inter-American Commission for Ethanol will promote the use of ethanol throughout the Western Hemisphere, set mandates for ethanol-blended fuel throughout the region and promote scientific and technical research in alternative based fuels.
'I am honored to help launch this commission with our South American neighbors to increase cooperation on ethanol use,' Bush said. 'Alternative fuels, such as ethanol, promise to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, strengthen our national security, spur economic development, and protect our environment. Brazil has demonstrated strong leadership in creating a reliable and solid ethanol industry, and I am confident that the Commission established today will allow us to form a formidable partnership to encourage ethanol use throughout the Western Hemisphere.'
Ethanol will impact the ports and shipping industry because ethanol facilities are already under development at Florida ports, and because it will lead to ocean transport of ethanol and related products.
