GPG volume on the rise with help from Nansha

The Guangzhou Port Group saw its container throughput rise to a record 7.1 million TEUs in 2007, with 62 percent of the volume coming from its terminal at Nansha on the western side of the Pearl River Delta.

The terminal operating group, in a year end business update, said it expects to handle at least 8.8 million TEUs in 2008, but is shooting for 10 million.

The update said there are now 18 international strings of vessels using Nansha, a port complex outside the city of Guangzhou that’s considered part of Guangzhou Port. The complex is divided into two terminals — one jointly owned by China Shipping and GPG, and the other by APM Terminals/COSCO Pacific and GPG.
