Great Lakes limestone trade slips in September

On a year-over-year basis, the sharp increase in limestone shipments from Canadian quarries was not enough to offset the drop in limestone shipments from quarries in the United States.

The Lake Carriers’ Association reported Thursday limestone shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 2.96 million tons in September, a 9.5 percent drop from September 2015.
Loadings from U.S. quarries during the month totaled 2.5 million tons, a 14.8 percent year-over-year decline.
However, shipments from Canadian quarries surged 35.8 percent year-over-year to 463,121 tons.
On a year-to-date basis, 19.47 million tons of limestone was shipped on the Great Lakes, a 7.9 percent decline from the corresponding period in 2015.
