Group forms McLean center at Kings Point

Group forms McLean center at Kings Point    A group of shipping industry executives who worked with Malcom McLean, a trucking executive who put the first containers on ships in 1956, have established The McLean Container Center at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.
The new center, to be housed in the American Maritime Museum and Bland Library at the Academy, will collect and preserve “records, photographs and other items important to the history of containerization,” the group said in a statement.
The McLean Container Center’s board of directors are: Paul F. Richardson, president of Paul F. Richardson Associates; Charles R. Cushing, president of C.R. Cushing & Co.; James Devine, president of New York Container Terminal; R. Kenneth Johns, president of R.K. Johns & Associates; Ronald M. Katims, president of RMKCG; Peter Keller, chief operating officer, NYK Line; Warren Mazek, dean of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; John D. McCown, chairman and chief executive officer, Trailer Bridge; Malcom P. McLean Jr., and Geoffrey V. Parker, both former shipping executives (Parker is also Malcom McLean’s son-in-law).
“It’s important to compile as complete and accurate an historical account of containerization and its far-reaching effects as possible. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point is the ideal location to house the center,” Richardson said.
