Grup TCB opens Colombia terminal

Spanish terminal operator Grup TCB said Tuesday it has begun operations at its new container terminal in Buenaventura, Colombia.

The company said it expects to handle 250,000 TEUs in 2011, but did not specify the facility's annual container-handling capacity. The terminal has two post-Panamax quay cranes and 480 meters of berth.

'Buenaventura is a strategic enclave for international shipping lines: close to the Panama Canal, at the midpoint between North and South America, and the closest port to the Far East,' Grup TCB said in a statement. 'From here, Colombia ships 80 percent of all the coffee produced in the country, along with 60 percent of all exports.'

Grup TCB operates 13 terminals globally, including one each in Brazil, Cuba and Mexico.
