Guam port authority seeks $700,000 from ship lines

Guam port authority seeks $700,000 from ship lines The Port Authority of Guam will appear in a federal district court Wednesday seeking more than $700,000 in damages from two shipping companies.
Filed in May, the complaint alleges that in August 2004 ocean carriers Marwan and Five Seas directed the vessel Ajman 2 to put to sea on a Mexico to Hong Kong trip.
According to the port, the vessel had an insufficient fuel supply, poorly maintained engines, and inadequate supplies, equipment and crew. During the trip, the Ajman 2 was forced to seek refuge at Guam due to Typhoon Chaba. The port authority granted the refuge request, but the port alleges that during the docking procedure the vessel battered the pier, causing more than $700,000 in damages.
In addition to Marwan and Five Seas, both headquartered in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, the court documents also list New York City-based maritime insurance firm Navigators Protection and Indemnity and the Al-Buhaira National Insurance Co., also based in Sharjah, U.A.E.
