Haight given Bowditch Award
Judge Charles S. Haight Jr. was awarded with the Nathaniel Bowditch Maritime Scholar of the Year award Wednesday evening by the American Merchant Marine Museum.
Haight, a senior district judge for the Southern District of New York, was appointed by President Ford and confirmed by the Senate in 1976.
A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, he was a trial attorney with the Admiralty and Shipping Section of the U.S. Justice Department from 1955 to 1957, when he joined Haight, Gardener, Poor & Havens. He specialized in maritime law with the firm before joining the federal bench. Both his father and grandfather worked at the firm and were well known admiralty attorneys.
