Hamburg Sud christens fifth 3,752-TEU ship from DSME

Germany’s Hamburg Sud today named the fifth in a series of six 3,752-TEU boxships at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo, Korea.

   The Bahia Laura will be phased into the specialist north/south liner carrier’s service between Asia, South Africa and the South America East Coast.

   The dimensions of the 50,800-deadweight-ton vessels in the series are 254 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (106 feet) wide, with a maximum draft of 12.4 meters (40.7 feet). Each ship has 610 reefer container plugs and a speed of 21.5 knots.

   The last ship in the series, the Bahia Negra, will be delivered in August.
