Hamburg Sud hits carbon reduction goal 5 years early

The German container line has set a new carbon target for 2020.

Hamburg Sud is revising upward carbon reduction goals to 45 percent by 2020 from 2009 levels after already achieving its fleet goal of 26 percent, the German liner said Monday. The company said CO2  reduction improved faster than forecast as a result of investing in energy-efficient vessels, increasing vessel sizes for new orders, chartering of energy-efficient ships, and optimizing vessel deployments.
The company measures carbon output on a TEU-per-kilometer basis. The carbon dioxide equivalency unit of measure also includes emissions such as methane that impact the climate, it said.
