Hialeah hosts Colombian mayor
Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina last week played host to Francisco Zuniga-Raicos, mayor of Santa Marta, Colombia.
The visit was an offshoot of Robaina's trip earlier this month to Barranquilla, Colombia, where he was establishing a sister-city agreement. Robaina met Zuniga-Raicos through Barranquilla Mayor Juan Garcia.
A City of Hialeah press release pointed out that Florida exports more than $220 million in goods through Barranquilla, a key trade gateway for Colombia as a whole.
Robaina said Hialeah is a good location for Colombian companies doing business with South Florida. Hialeah is a contiguous part of the Miami trade gateway, and it is also the top-ranking U.S. city Spanish speaking residents, with an estimated 94 percent of Hialeah's residents able to speak Spanish.
