HICKERSON NAMED PRESIDENT OF ROADWAY NEXT DAY

Roadway Corp. named John Hickerson to manage the expansion of next-day services for the giant ground transportation holding company, effective Jan. 19.

As president of Roadway Next Day Corp. Hickerson will be responsible for New Penn Motor Express, a regional, next-day less-than-truckload carrier Roadway acquired in November 2001, and any other express delivery companies Roadway acquires. Hickerson has been president of Con-Way Southern Express.

On Dec. 30 Roadway said it plans to sell regional truckload carrier Arnold Transportation Services, which it bought along with New Penn from Arnold Industries, as part of the company’s strategy to focus on the high-margin next-day LTL sector. Key competitors in this area include super-regional carriers FedEx Freight and Con-Way Transportation Services.
