He will be responsible for customer relationship management of the group's largest customers worldwide, DHL said in a statement.
In addition to this role, Hickler, based in Plantation, Fla., will also serve as chairman of the DHL Global Commercial Board, which was recently established to address and leverage commercial priorities for all of DHL's business units.
Hickler has more than 25 years in the international freight transportation industry. He joined DHL in 2005, and most recently served as CEO of DHL Express. He began his career in the ocean transportation business, and for 20 years held senior management positions with NOL Group and APL Logistics. He also served on the boards of several joint venture firms in the automotive and technology sectors.
