“Hints of recovery” on Great Lakes
U.S.-flag vessels hauled 7.5 million net tons of dry bulk cargo on the Great Lakes in July, a 37 percent decrease compared to both a year ago and the month's five-year average.While shipments of most commodities declined, there were perhaps some hints of recovery, said the Lake Carriers Association. Iron ore and limestone totals were the highest recorded for any month this year.
July also saw the most U.S.-flag lakers in service at any point this year. As the month came to an end, 53 hulls were in service. The previous peak was 49 vessels on June 1.
