HK air cargo terminal gets IT upgrade

Hong Kong’s SuperTerminal 1 – the world’s largest independent air cargo handling facility – will migrate to a totally new cargo management system in December, following almost three years’ development by the operator of the terminal, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals, Ltd. (HACTL).
The new $30 million system is the fourth major upgrade to the terminal cargo management system, first introduced at Hong Kong’s former airport, Kai Tak, in 1976. The upgrade includes multilingual, online help, and personalization capabilities, HACTL said. The system now also handles images, includes cargo tracking features and is designed to integrate easily with airlines’ systems.
SuperTerminal 1, opened in 1998 when the new Chep Lap Kok airport began operations, has capacity for 3.5 million tons of air cargo. In 2010, it handled a record 2.9 million tons.
