Hong Kong terminal to test x-ray for all containers

Modern Terminals in Hong Kong has completed installation of a truck x-ray scanning system that is integrated into its gate management system, according to spokesman Joel Cheung.

The Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) made by Science Applications International Corp. is typically used in standalone facilities or dispatched on a mobile unit to search for contraband and terrorist weapons. Modern Terminals and Hong Kong International Terminal are running pilot programs to combine high-speed scanning technology at the truck receiving gates (September American Shipper, page 14).

A truck-mounted mobile VACIS will be ready to run a separate test this month to see how efficiently containers can be scanned as they come through Modern’s barge facility for transfer to ocean vessels, Cheung said.
