Horizon buys 3PL Aero Logistics

   Jones Act container shipping company Horizon Lines Inc. has acquired third-party logistics provider Aero Logistics, based in South San Francisco.

   The purchase comes a week after Horizon formed a unit called Horizon Logistics to manage what it says is a growing logistics services business.

   Aero Logistics designs and manages custom freight shipping and special handling programs for customers in service-sensitive industries including high-tech, health care, energy, mining, retail and apparel. The company offers air freight, trucking and warehousing services.

   Aero operates a fleet of GPS-equipped trailers under the direction of their Aero Transportation division which provides expedited less-than-truckload and full truckload service throughout North America and Mexico.

   Horizon operates a fleet of 21 U.S.-flag ships on routes between the U.S. mainland and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and Micronesia.
