Horizon Lines arranges logistics for solar electric facility
Horizon Lines said its Horizon Logistics unit served as a lead logistics provider for SunPower Corp. during installation of North America’s largest solar photovoltaic energy system at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.
The 14-megawatt system has been fully operational since December, generating about one-fourth of the total power used at the base outside Las Vegas, where 12,000 people live and work.
During installation in late 2007, the Aero Logistics critical delivery division of Horizon managed the importation of raw materials from Canada and the delivery of solar panel assemblies from Berkeley, Calif., to Nellis.
Aero moved from five to 10 flatbed loads of equipment per day for more than three months to Nellis.
