Horizon matches Matson fuel surcharge increase to Hawaii, Guam Horizon Lines, the No. 2 ocean carrier servicing the Hawaiian Islands, said it is increasing the fuel surcharge for its Hawaii and Guam service by 1.5 percent to 24 percent, effective Aug. 20.
   The Charlotte, N.C.-based shipping line said the increase was due to 'yet another significant upward trend in fuel costs over the past few weeks.” The firm is looking to the increase to offset the higher price of bunker fuel.
   “Fuel costs are forecasted to remain at this level or move higher as we move through the summer season and into the fall,” Horizon said in a release.
   The move follows last week's announcement of a fuel surcharge increase by Horizon's lead rival, Matson Navigation. Oakland-based Matson, the top carrier servicing the Hawaiian Islands and Guam, said it would increase its fuel surcharge from 22.5 percent to 24 percent, effective Aug. 19. The carrier is a wholly owned subsidiary of Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin.
