Hotel developer Lowe Enterprises wants to build a 225-room luxury hotel on a five-acre property that currently is home to the South Carolina Ports Authority in downtown Charleston, according to a report in the Post and Courier newspaper.
The port authority is selling the prime real estate to raise money and move its headquarters to the Wando Welch container terminal so management can be closer to port operations. The downtown location is relatively isolated from its main terminals in North Charleston and Mount Pleasant, which sit on the other side of the Cooper River.
Lowe Enterprises has signed a tentative agreement to purchase the property, pending customary closing conditions.
