Houston port volumes up in 2008
The Port of Houston handled 35.2 million tons of cargo in 2008, up from 33.2 million in 2007.
Presenting the port’s year end results Wednesday, acting executive director Wade Battles reported container volumes totaled 1.79 million TEU in 2008, a slight increase than the 1.77 million TEUs recorded in 2007, even though container traffic was sharply lower in November and December.
The port had revenues of $196.5 million in 2008 compared to $188.8 million in 2007.
Port commissioners approved $33.8 million for electric cranes at Bayport Container Terminal as well as a request for qualifications for professional services for the design of stevedore support building Bayport.
