HPH opens new terminal at Felixstowe   The Port of Felixstowe, the United Kingdom’s largest container port, will formally open a new deep water terminal Thursday.
   The terminal consists of two super post-Panamax berths and is part of a 1 billion pound ($1.5 billion) investment by Hutchison Port Holdings.
   Felixstowe is the gateway for more than 40 percent of the United Kingdom’s container cargo, worth an estimated 60 billion pounds ($90 billion) per year. The expansion could add another 20 billion pounds ($30 billion) worth of annual trade, Hutchison said.
   The berths and seven giant cranes will be able to accommodate container ships as large as 24-containers across that are now coming on line.
   Hutchison, which has operating rights for the entire port, is also investing a lot of money in technology to improve customer service and reduce carbon emissions.
  As part of the project, the port will construct a third rail terminal in 2012 with capacity for 30-car trains. It will be the longest terminal of its kind in the UK, doubling the rail capacity at the port and its ability to move goods across the country, HPH said.
