Hutchison subsidiary to develop Karachi port phase III project

   The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has awarded Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), a subsidiary of the Hutchison Port Holdings Group, a concession for development of its phase III project at West Wharf of Karachi port.

   The Phase III project involves deepening the alongside draft to 14 meters (46 feet), acquiring and redeveloping additional land, and acquiring additional quayside and container yard equipment.

   As per the agreement, KICT will operate seven quay cranes, 20 rubber tired gantry cranes, eight reachstackers, six empty container handlers, 48 terminal tractors, 64 chassis, six forklifts, and numerous radio data terminals.

   According to KPT, Pakistan’s container throughput passed 1 million TEUs in 2004.
