Hutchison to build container terminal at Port of Manta, Ecuador

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), the world’s largest container terminal group, has been awarded a concession by the Manta Port Authority to build and operate a new container terminal at the Port of Manta in Ecuador.

The new terminal is expected to be operational in 2007 with a quay length of 1,250 meters (4,101 feet), a depth alongside of 15 meters (49.2 feet), and a total area after project completion of 63 hectares.

John Meredith, HPH’s group managing director, said the terminal “will strengthen HPH’s Latin American network on the West Coast of South America. Being the closest port to Asia, the terminal will benefit from the growing trade activities between the two regions.”

HPH operates a total of 251 berths in 43 ports worldwide and handled 51.8 million TEUs last year.
