HYUNDAI MERCHANT MARINE ORDERS 5,700-TEU SHIP

Korean shipping line Hyundai Merchant Marine has ordered a 5,700-TEU containership to be delivered in the first half of 2003, when it will be deployed on the Asia/Europe route.

The ship will be 275 meters long, 40 meters wide, with a draft of 24 meters. It will have a speed of 25.6 knots.

Hyundai said it has secured $67 million in foreign capital for the vessel order 'at advantageous interest rates.'

In addition, the Korean carrier said it plans to order two container vessels in the 4,700-TEU range in the second half of this year.

This year, Hyundai expects to carry 1.85 million TEUs of containerized cargo, 9 percent more than in 2000.
