ICAO elects new governing council

   The International Civil Aviation Organization has elected new member states for a three-year term to the organization’s governing council.
   Eleven new members were elected to the 36-representative body.  
   The voting process, divided into three parts, covered states important to air transport in the first phase of voting, and states important to international air navigation in the second round of voting. Finally, members were voted in based on geographical representation.
   In the second phase, new members included Norway, Portugal and Venezuela. New states in the third round of voting were Bolivia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Libya, Nicaragua, Poland, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
   Re-elected members included Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — a group that comprised the entire first round of voting. Argentina, Egypt, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa and Spain were the re-elected members in the second round. In the third phase of voting, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malaysia, Korea and the United Arab Emirates achieved re-election.
