ICS chair praises IMO

   International Chamber of Shipping Chairman Masamichi Morooka shined a spotlight on the International Maritime Organization, following suggestion from delegates at the World Ocean Summit that the United Nations establish a world ocean organization.
   Morooka, who spoke at the summit in San Francisco on Tuesday, said that though the IMO is small, it is effective in regulating conventions that are enforced around the world.
   “The IMO MARPOL [The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships] Convention on pollution prevention has contributed significantly to the dramatic reduction in oil pollution from ships despite massive growth in maritime trade,” he said. “MARPOL also addresses sulphur emissions and the reduction of CO2 from global shipping, the only global deal on CO2 emissions of its kind developed for a whole industrial sector. This will reduce CO2 from ships by 20 percent by 2020 with further reductions going forward.”
