Kodiak landed IKEA as its driverless launch shipper partner, with a long-haul rollout targeted by the end of the year. In this FreightWaves Today segment, Daniel Goff of Kodiak and Chas Wurster of PrePass break down what has to happen before driverless trucks scale: safety case work, inspections, roadside enforcement and state-by-state compliance. The big takeaway: autonomous trucking is moving past demos and into real shipper networks, but the hard part is proving safety to regulators, law enforcement and the public. #AutonomousTrucking #Kodiak #PrePass
Kodiak Robotics has designated IKEA as its launch partner for driverless long-haul trucking service, with a planned commercial debut before the end of 2025. The announcement comes as Kodiak also formalized a partnership with PrePass to connect its autonomous trucks directly into state roadside inspection systems — a compliance step the company calls central to its safety case for removing the driver entirely.
The two companies are not starting from scratch. Kodiak has been delivering IKEA freight daily from Houston to a distribution point near Frisco, Texas, for the past four years, with a safety driver behind the wheel. That operational history informed the decision to make IKEA the anchor partner for driverless deployment, said Daniel Goff, vice president of external affairs at Kodiak.
“As we were thinking about who the right partners would be to launch that, IKEA was at the top of our list,” Goff said. “So our goal is to launch that service by the end of the year.”
Kodiak has logged close to 4 million miles of autonomous testing over more than seven years. Goff said the company must complete what it calls a “safety case” — a comprehensive, multi-angle demonstration of system safety — before pulling the driver. That case spans hardware fault analysis, simulation testing, and track verification, and is being built without a specific federal or state regulatory standard to benchmark against, since none yet exists for autonomous trucks.
The PrePass integration addresses a concrete operational gap: how a driverless truck interacts with weigh stations and roadside enforcement. PrePass, which already serves more than 900,000 commercial vehicles through its nationwide weigh-station bypass and compliance network, will relay pre-trip inspection data to enforcement officers as Kodiak trucks approach inspection sites. Chas Wurster, chief technology officer at PrePass, said the pre-trip inspections for autonomous trucks are conducted by personnel trained by the same body that certifies enforcement officers. Under the enhanced inspection standard developed by CVSA specifically for autonomous vehicles, trucks must undergo what amounts to a near-annual inspection every four days, with zero defects permitted.
“Every 4 days to do an enhanced inspection, you have to do what almost amounts to an annual inspection on the truck,” Goff said. “And there can be no defects on that vehicle.”
The program launches in Texas and Louisiana, with expansion planned along neighboring state freight corridors. Wurster said PrePass’s existing state relationships allow for faster onboarding: “You could reasonably expect we’re going after the neighboring states to Texas and Louisiana next in order to build out some of these freight corridors.” PrePass has previously attributed more than $12 billion in fleet savings over three-plus decades to its bypass network, primarily through fuel and time efficiencies — savings Wurster said will extend to autonomous trucks entering the system.
Kodiak’s timeline calls for the first driverless IKEA run before year-end, with broader scaling through 2027. Goff said the company expects autonomous freight trucks to follow a similar public-acceptance curve to robo-taxis in cities such as Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, where initial skepticism gave way to routine acceptance.
- Kodiak plans to launch driverless long-haul service with IKEA by end of 2025, on a Houston-to-Frisco, Texas, corridor the pair has run with safety drivers for four years.
- Kodiak has accumulated nearly 4 million autonomous miles over 7-plus years and must complete a comprehensive safety case before removing the driver.
- PrePass will integrate Kodiak trucks into its 900,000-vehicle nationwide bypass network, relaying pre-trip inspection data to roadside enforcement officers under a CVSA standard requiring a near-annual-equivalent inspection every four days.
