ILA picks Hughes as executive vice president

The Executive Council of the International Longshoremen's Association has elected Richard P. Hughes Jr., as executive vice president.

Hughes replaces Al Cernadas, who resigned as the union's executive vice president Sept. 22.    Hughes will fill the unexpired term of Cernadas' office, which runs until July 2007.

Hughes had been secretary-treasurer of the ILA's Atlantic Coast District. He has been acting as the ILA's executive vice president since October 2004, while Cernadas was on a leave of absence after being indicted by the U.S. Justice Department.

John Bowers, ILA president, said Hughes will retain his secretary-treasurer role with the Atlantic Coast District without pay, until the district's own executive board picks someone else for that position.

Bowers called Hughes 'one of my most trusted advisors,' in a statement released by the ILA.
