ILWU stop work meeting shuts PierPass gates Thursday

Southern California locals of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have called a stop-work meeting for the second shift Thursday, a move that will shut the PierPass night gates for that night.

PierPass, a program developed by terminal operators to space container moves in and out of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles more evenly throughout the day, has been in effect since July 23.

The stop-work meeting will shut most docks and ship operations, but the contract between the union and its employers does allow for work on military cargoes, passengers ships, and reefer vessels, and on some occasions at the rail yards that support the ports.
