India container exports to U.S. flat in 2008

India container exports to U.S. flat in 2008    Loaded container volume from the Indian Subcontinent and U.S. East Coast saw no growth in 2008, according to research from maritime consultant Dynamar.
In its latest Dynaliners newsletter, the firm said loaded liftings remained at 618,000 TEUs, the same as in 2007. The largest carrier in the trade, Maersk Line, increased its volume by 5 percent to 192,000 TEUs, or 31 percent of the trade. That added volume increased the Danish carrier's market share from 29.4 percent to 31 percent.
APL, the second-biggest carrier in the trade, saw volume increase 4 percent to 93,000 TEUs, or 15 percent of the trade, while Hapag-Lloyd saw a 37 percent increase to 78,000 TEUs, becoming the third-largest carrier in the trade. Its share rose from 9.2 percent to 12.6 percent.
Of the top 10 carriers in the trade, only Hanjin Shipping (with flat growth) and CMA CGM (an 8 percent reduction in volume) failed to record volume growth in 2008. Dynamar suggests that growth has come at the expense of smaller operators.
