India may form second registry
India is exploring setting up an international ship registry because of a declining national fleet.
According to the Indian newspaper Business Standard, ships flagged under the alternate registry would have “more operational freedom and exemption from a slew of taxes.”
The magazine notes that Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani is planning to have his company Reliance Industries also set up a shipping registry in the Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone.
Other countries with two registries include Denmark, Norway, France and the United Kingdom.
