India pondering tougher product safety standards

In the wake of concern over the quality and safety of Chinese exported goods, India's government is mulling a new set of laws that would punish manufacturers for selling substandard goods.

The proposals would 'substantially overhaul existing consumer laws,' according to a report Monday in the Times of India, and could even hold suppliers responsible for the distribution of shoddy products.

The new laws are in their formative stage and are part of a host of recommendations India's Planning Commission will consider in December.
