India trade climbs 15-fold since 1984

Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday submitted the country’s budget, and it’s interesting to note just how far the country has come in the 25 years since Mukherjee last served as finance minister, in 1984.

   According to statistics in the Times of India Monday, the country’s GDP in 1984 was $154.2 billion. In the budget turned in Monday, the GDP was $686 billion.

   Imports, in terms of value have risen from $12.9 billion in 1984 to $219.4 billion today. Exports have increased from $10.8 billion in 1984 to $170.7 billion. Indian residents' annual per capita income has risen from 9,409 rupees ($193) 25 years ago to the 25,661 rupees ($527).
