India volume up 4% in last 6 months

   Container traffic at India’s 13 state-owned ports grew 4.3 percent in the first half of its current fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, according to statistics from the Indian Ports Association.
   The statistics do not include traffic at privately-owned ports, such as Mundra and Pipavav, which have become key cargo gateways in recent years. However, they do include the Nhava Sheva port complex (near Mumbai) and Chennai, India’s two biggest container ports.
   Total volume in the six month period at the 13 ports reached nearly 3.9 million TEUs, roughly 2.2 million TEUs of which was handled at Nhava Sheva (growth of 1.9 percent from the same period in 2010).
   Chennai volume rose 4.7 percent, to 794,000 TEUs.
