Intrepid to move to dry dock

Intrepid to move to dry dock World War II aircraft carrier 'USS Intrepid,' which is undergoing repairs and maintenance after spending 25 years as a floating museum, is expected to be moved into a dry dock in Bayonne today.
   The warship drew the media spotlight this winter as workers struggled to free her from silt that had accumulated around her hull and propellers while she had been docked on Manhattan’s West Side. Tugs finally succeeded in moving her to New Jersey in December.
   Built in 1943, the ship last underwent a major overhaul in 1977. It is scheduled to be moved today from a cruise ship dock in Bayonne, where she has been tied up, to a nearby graving dock. There the hull will be scrapped, power washed and painted, and two massive bronze propellers that had been stuck in the mud will be removed.
   This summer the ship will be moved again, to Stapleton on Staten Island, where it will be tied up while crews will do interior work and install new exhibits in the floating museum.
   'Intrepid' took part in every major battle in the last two years of the Pacific theater of World War II, participated in the Vietnam and Korean wars, and served as a capsule recovery platform for NASA.
