The Information System Agreement, a group set up by 10 ocean carriers to
develop electronic data interchange standards in shipping, is finalizing a
standardized format for electronic transmission of bills of lading.
The new format will be completed within a month, a manager of ISA said.
Carriers will be able to download the B/L format from ISA’s website.
However, ISA said that the organization has no plans to implement a "web
form" B/L on its website.
Several carriers already enable shippers and forwarders to download
commercial B/Ls on the Internet instead of mailing the B/Ls or asking
customers to collect the B/Ls physically from carrier offices.
