Jacksonville port awards contract for TraPac Terminal

The Jacksonville Port Authority Wednesday awarded a contract to W.G. Yates and Sons Construction to build the new container terminal at Dames Point, to be operated for Mitsui O.S.K. Line.

The terminal will be operated by the MOL affiliate Trans Pacific Container Service Corp. (TraPac) on a 130-acre site that could handle 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized cargo a year when fully operational. Initial cargo-handling operations are scheduled to begin in late 2008.

Yates Construction, a major national construction company with headquarters in Philadelphia, Miss., will handle three major areas of the project, port officials said. That includes dredging the berthing area to 40 feet; building 2,400 linear feet of berth space; and paving, lighting, and fencing the cargo storage area. Construction is expected to be underway within 30 days.
