Total port tonnage rose to a new annual record of 7.6 million, up from 7.3 million in the 2003 fiscal year. The previous record of 7.5 million was set in 1999.
Breakbulk cargoes at the port, including lumber, paper, steel, poultry and other non-containerized commodities, grew 18 percent to 830,000 tons in the 2004 fiscal year.
Containerized cargo tonnage — primarily for consumer goods — increased 5 percent to 3.9 million tons.
Bulk cargoes, including crushed limestone and other aggregates, rose 10 percent to 1.8 million tons.
Over the same period, vehicle cargoes fell 7 percent to 1 million tons.
In fiscal year 2004, 54 percent of all cargo was imported and 46 percent was exported.
Earlier this year, Hamburg Sud signed a new three-year lease agreement with the Jacksonville Port Authority and Crowley Maritime Corp. transferred its Bahamas container service from its private terminal in Jacksonville to the port authority.
Ceres Marine Terminals has signed a five-year lease with the port authority.
