Jamaica takes CSI live Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Ralph Basham said Thursday that the Container Security Initiative (CSI) program is now operational in Jamaica.
   CBP announced in June that Jamaica was joining the CSI program, and the commissioners said Thursday that the actual implementation of the program 'marks a step forward in the protection of goods moving from the Caribbean to the United States, as well as a step ahead for Jamaican and United States commerce.'
   The CSI program checks U.S.-bound containers in foreign ports before the cargo departs. Containers that are deemed to be high risk are physically checked at the foreign port.
   CBP says CSI is one of the most important elements in a strategy to improve national security by 'extending the borders' of the U.S. and implement security checks further up the supply chain.
