January inbound containers up 29 percent in L.A.

   The number of loaded inbound containers rose 29 percent in January at the port of Los Angeles, to 340,908 TEUs, from 264,681 TEUs in January 2003.

   Loaded outbound traffic, though, dropped 8 percent over the same period, to 97,093 TEUs.

   The wider imbalance between inbound and outbound traffic led to a 20-percent rise in the total number of empty containers handled, to 178,086 TEUs, from 148,373 TEUs in January 2003.

   Starting the year with a strong January, the port of Los Angeles reported a total box traffic of 616,087 TEUs for January, 19 percent higher than for the same month in 2003.
