The Guanabara, operated by MOL, reported it was under attack Friday about 328 nautical miles southeast of Oman.
Special forces from the USS Bulkeley boarded the tanker after the captain confirmed the entire crew was locked in a fortified safe room. Four pirates were captured, according to a CNN report.
No gunfire was exchanged. U.S. officials are still trying to determine what to do with the pirates.
The Bulkeley is part of an international naval task force that seeks to deter pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
