Jaxport sets new cargo records in FY2017

The North Florida port’s public seaport terminals experienced record growth in containerized cargo, as well as vehicles and overall tonnage for the 2017 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30.    The Jacksonville Port Authority’s (Jaxport) public seaport terminals experienced record growth in containerized cargo, as well as vehicles and overall tonnage for its 2017 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, the port authority revealed Monday.
Container volumes handled at Jaxport terminals during the fiscal year reached over 1 million TEUs, up 7 percent year-over-year. When combined with the containers handled through private terminals, over 1.3 million containers moved through the port.
Jaxport’s Puerto Rican container business grew 10 percent year-over-year, while the Asian container trade continued to be the fastest growing segment of the port’s container business, accounting for nearly 40 percent of total container business at the port.
Of the 10 fully cellular container services connecting the port to regions outside of North America, four call Asia, according to BlueWater Reporting’s Port Dashboard tool.
In addition to thriving box volumes, the port also moved a record-setting 693,000 units of vehicles during the fiscal year, driven by strong auto sales in the U.S. Southeast, and the continued growth of the port’s three auto processors – AMPORTS, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and Southeast Toyota Distributors.
