Jebel Ali Port begins construction on new terminal

Construction began on Container Terminal 4 at Jebel Ali Port, which will increase the port’s capacity to 22.1 million TEUs by 2018.    Jebel Ali Port has begun construction on a reclaimed island north of Terminal 2 to establish the $1.6 billion Container Terminal 4, which will allow port operator DP World to further expand capacity at the port by 7.8 million TEUs.
Phase one will increase the port’s capacity by 3.1 million TEUs to a total of 22.1 million TEUs by 2018, DP World said.
The first phase will feature a 1,200-meter long quay with an 18-meter draft and 13 remotely operated cranes. In addition, some 35 automated rail mounted gantry cranes will operate within the yard.
A 3,000-meter causeway and bridge are being constructed to provide access to the island from land near Terminal 2, which will be partially open to traffic before the end of 2015.
DP World’s terminals in the United Arab Emirates handled a total of 7.9 million TEUs in the first half of 2015, up 6 percent from the same period last year. In addition to Jebel Ali Port, DP World’s UAE portfolio includes Mina Rashid Cruise Terminal and Coastal Berth, Mina Al Hamriya in Dubai city, and Fujairah Container Terminal.
