John C. Emery services to be held May 11 Services will be held May 11 for John C. Emery Jr., former chairman and chief executive officer of Emery Air Freight who died April 19.
   John Emery Jr. joined Emery Air Freight, the company founded by his father, John Emery, an officer in the Naval Air Transport Service and a peace time Railway Express manager.
   John Emery Jr. starting his career as a truck driver for the company, after leaving the Navy. He advanced through the ranks: street salesman, New York sales manager, district manager, regional manager, vice president of sales and executive vice president before becoming CEO and chairman, according to The International Cargo Association. TIACA inducted Emery into its hall of fame in 1997.
   Under his leadership the company grew from sales of $80 million to one with revenues of $1.2 billion at his retirement.
   'He will be remembered as one of the great pioneers of our industry,” said Guenter Rohrmann, former CEO and chairman of AEI, speaking at the Cargo Network Services conference in San Diego, Calif.
   Emery purchased Purolator Courier in 1987, and was subsequently purchased by Consolidated Freightways, which became CNF Inc. A successor company, Menlo Worldwide Forwarding, was acquired by UPS in 2004.
   As a strong freight forwarder with a global presence, Emery Air Freight’s assets, technology and operating systems were integrated into UPS Supply Chain Solutions, said Susan Rosenberg, a UPS press officer.
   The May 11 service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien, Conn.
