“K” Line containership under inspection after drifting away from Port of Boston

The 8,614-TEU vessel Helsinki Bridge broke free from its berth and drifted away from the Port of Boston during heavy winds on Tuesday, according to multiple media reports.

   A “K” Line containership broke loose from its moorings in the Port of Boston on Tuesday and drifted into the main channel, , according to multiple media reports.
   According to local TV station 7News, the U.S. Coast Guard is working to inspect the vessel, which was retrieved on Tuesday and brought back into Boston Harbor.
   The 8,614-TEU Helsinki Bridge reportedly struck the pier due to 12 mooring lines broken by heavy winds. Port officials told local news outlets that longshoremen were unloading the ship at the time of the incident but no one was injured.
   According to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting, the Helsinki Bridge is currently sailing on THE Alliance’s North American East Coast Loop 2 and is operated by Japanese ocean carrier “K” Line. The vessel sailed into Boston after having called the Port of New York and is still scheduled to sail to the Port of Wilmington next week. The full port rotation for the loop is Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Budan, New York, Boston, Wilmington, Savannah, Busan and back to Qingdao.
